Lollipop man quits after council bans him from high-fiving children

It makes me terribly sad. I didn't want to resign but I can't work under these conditions.

For most of us, a lollipop man or woman is the friendly face who greets children and ushers them safely across busy roads on their way to school in the morning.

But for 77-year-old Bryan Broom being a 'popular' and 'fun' lollipop man became a point of concern when his local council told him he could no longer high five children because it could be interpreted as grooming. East Riding of Yorkshire Council said it had received a number of complaints from parents about Mr Broom's behaviour. These complaints were investigated but not upheld, the council said in a statement.

Shocked by the council’s reaction, Bryan made the tough decision to quit the job he loved after almost two decades. His resignation has left parents and school children devastated.
