Joe Swash on DOI win: 'It's a bit embarrassing!'
Congratulations to Joe Swash and Alex Murphy, who were crowned the winners of 2020's Dancing on Ice at the weekend.
So how does it feel to be reigning ice champs, and will Joe ever skate again?
After watching a montage of his Dancing on Ice journey, Joe revealed what was going through his head as he won the series, "It's been the craziest journey. It's gone on for ages. I think we started this in September. I remember spending days and days just trying to push off and go straight. So to get to here and get to the final, it is a little bit surreal. I don't think it's sunk in really".
"We all wanted to get to the final", agreed pro skater Alex Murphy, "and I think the three in the final were the best they could have picked."
"He beat the best skater that we've ever had", pointed out Phillip.
"It's a little bit embarrassing, isn't it", said Joe.
"No, not at all!", Phillip reassured him, with Holly adding, "If you look at where you started, to where you ended - and I think that Charlie Chaplin routine was so special, and I think it was that, and the fact that people just love you."
Joe credited his fellow finalists for pushing him so far. "Libby was my inspiration. And Perri - he's got this old head on young shoulders ... he's got such a great soul. They really did help me."
Phillip called Joe 'chaos', when he first started the show. "You were like some sort of mad stunt skater just throwing yourself on the floor all the time."
"I go through life with a motto", revealed Joe, "If you're gonna do it, do it big, don't hold back! And it weren't until I'd done the ice skating that I thought it might not be the greatest idea."
"My knees, my back... I'm 38 Phil, I know I don't look it now, but I feel inside about 67."
Will Joe continue to ice skate? "I don't think I'll skate for a couple of weeks", he admitted, "My skates - honestly, they are the smelliest thing you've ever smelt. I'm gonna air them a little bit. But I'm gonna be one of them geezers, one of them dads at Christmas, I'm going to go on the open ice rink, and start chucking out Bolero moves!"
