How to protect yourself from midges this summer

Holidaying, hiking and camping in the UK is a wonderful way to spend the summer months, but unfortunately midges can ruin the fun. Often found in swarms around water sources, they’re prevalent in some of our favourite holiday destinations including Cornwall, the Lake District, Scotland and Pembrokeshire.

Professor James Logan joins us live from Scotland to explain why there’s been a rise in midges this year and what we can do to protect ourselves.

Top tips to avoid midges

  • Avoid being outside in the early mornings and late evenings as these are their most popular timings to be around.

  • If you are chilling outside, try to go somewhere in the sun with a breeze, as they do not like these conditions.

  • Try to wear bright clothing! They are often attracted to darker colours.

  • They will only seriously attack you when you're standing still so try to keep walking and avoid standing still.

  • Make sure you leave your windows and door closed and the light off where possible so they can't get into your house.

  • Look into buying some protective wear such as a net to wear over your face.

  • Buy some midge repellent and citronella candles.
