From extending their shelf lives, and even using the leftovers as a descaler - Nancy Birtwhistle is here to help you cut down on waste and save precious pennies with her handy hacks that will keep your summer berries perfectly fresh, for the foreseeable!
How to make your summer fruits last for two weeks:
Strawberries, raspberries and blueberries are in season! But they are known to only last a couple of days before they start to go bad, but Nancy has a method to keep them fresh for two weeks.
Soak them in an acid solution:
10g citric acid plus 60ml boiling water to dissolve then add 400ml cold water.
Or use 70ml lemon juice or 70ml vinegar and 400ml cold water
Once soaked, you will see all the dirt and grime that comes off them, dry them and then place in an airtight jar. This will make them stay fresh for up to two weeks.
Descale your kettle with the solution:
Once you have cleaned your berries in the acid solution, you can then use this to descale your kettle. Just put it in the kettle and simply boil it. This will descale your kettle without using harsh chemicals.
Make strawberry top vinegar:
When it is time to use your strawberries make sure when you cut off the tops and save these. You can create a strawberry top vinegar. This can be used as a tasty salad dressing, or even used in cleaning around the house.
