Easy World Book Day outfits you can make at home

It’s World Book Day on Thursday - every child’s favourite day at school, when they get to ditch their uniform and turn up in fancy dress. But if you've left it too late to pre-order that Cat in the Hat costume, don’t panic!

Georgina Burnett shows us how to recreate character costumes from scratch, and you won't have to spend a penny.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

WHAT YOU NEED: Glue, paper plates, cardboard and green paint

For the body: Glue paper plates (6 or 8) together to get a 3d effect and paint green

  • Glue cardboard feet to sides and glue the plates together in a column

  • Add ribbon to the top circle to hold around the round neck

  • For the head: Cut a ring out of red card (or white card painted red) and glue purple antennas made from card to the top

  • Make a headband out of card and glue on the red circle

Paddington Bear

WHAT YOU WILL NEED: A small cardboard box, sellotape, felt or card

  • Wrap a small box with packaging paper

  • Use tape to make a handle at the top and decorate

  • Make a label to hang from toggle on duffle coat

  • If you don't have a red hat this could be made from felt or card

Cat in the Hat

WHAT YOU WILL NEED: Pair of black tights, newspaper, serviette and paper plates.

  • For the tail, use black tights with one leg stuffed with newspaper and the other unstuffed to tie around the waist

  • Make the hat using a washing paper pot with red and white layers of card and a paper plate glued to base

  • Cut a serviette or white felt for the tummy and sew roughly, or use sticky back plastic to glue to the child's top

  • Add a red bow

  • Face paint the white face, black whiskers and pink nose

Willy Wonka's Golden Ticket

WHAT YOU WILL NEED: Packaging paper, gold paint and a Sharpie.

  • Glue two lots of packaging paper or gold paper to each other

  • Once dry fold over and cut a hole in the folded end for the head

  • Draw the ticket details on with a Sharpie

Alice in Wonderland

WHAT YOU WILL NEED: A cardboard box big enough to fit the child in, paint in a range of colours

  • Make holes at the sides of the box for arms

  • Cut a hole in the roof so the head is comfort and secure the side flaps so they rest on the shoulders

  • Decorate!

The BFG

WHAT YOU NEED: Cardboard, wool, glue, felt and an old wrapping paper tube

  • Cut out ears from cardboard and stick to an old Alice band

  • Glue white wool for hair

  • To make the BFG’s horn, glue a cardboard cone to the inner tube of wrapping paper

  • For the dreams jar, add fairy lights to a plastic or glass jar

  • If you need to make a waistcoat, cut the back and side sections out of felt and glue together
