Here's how to decorate your doorway with your very own autumnal wreath
Cosy season is in full swing, with trees across the nation sweeping the landscape in beautiful gold, red and browns. So, what better time to put those leaves to good use and make your own autumnal wreath?
From foraging for dried flowers, to snapping up those perfectly crunchy leaves, Alice Hare is live from the This Morning forest to show us the simple and free ways that you can transform your front door by making your own show-stopping autumnal wreath.
Step 1: Make your own wreath base
If you have a wreath base already, you can reuse it or you can make your own. Avoid using floral foam due to its environmental impact. Instead, opt for moss and a wreath ring which can be made out of recycled cardboard. Attach wire to the ring, take a handful of moss and bind it on with wire or twine.
If you include live plants such as ivy, the wreath will stay fresh for longer. You can also reuse it to create a Christmas wreath later in the year, by removing any foliage that’s past its best and updating it with eucalyptus or fir.
Step 2: Choose your foliage
Forage for foliage in your garden. Alternatively, go to your local florist or garden shop and buy a good mix of foliages or ask for any cutaways that would otherwise be thrown away. Try to have at least 3 different types to give interest and texture.
Step 3: Binding bunches to your foliage
Place one bunch of foliage over the other, covering up the binding of the previous one each time. Keep close to the ring on the inside edge and expand the outside edge if you want a wider wreath - Just be mindful of the size of your door.
Step 4: Decorating your wreath
Before decorating, decide where the top of the wreath is. You can use decorations you already have or more natural things such as pine cones, teasels and berries. Look for warm colours to keep an autumnal theme. Simply push the decorations into the base or wire them in if they are fragile. You can use both fresh and dried decorations.
Step 5: How to make your wreath last longer
Keep your wreath away from heat and keep it moist. Spritz with water if it’s under a porch and you can soak the moss rings in water to keep it hydrated.
