'Once you get down into the black hole it's very hard to get out'
There is still a stigma, people can still think you're flaky or unreliable, but depression can happen to people the opposite of that. They are often people pleasers.
Beverley Callard is a national treasure when it comes to soap stars and has played the iconic barmaid Liz McDonald in Coronation Street for 27 years. But since 2009, Beverley has battled with severe depression and just last month she was signed off work after she was taken ill.
She joined us to talk about her latest bout of depression, how it was brought on by an unexpected change in her medication, and why she credits her make-up artist friends for saving her life, " I sat on the Rovers stairs for a little while whilst they were moving cameras and I was just crying silently… and one of the make-up girls, who are our great friends, they saved my life. They know me so well, and they just said ‘you need to go home’."
I’m going through something very similar at the moment and listening to your story is just so inspiring
During the interview, Rylan admitted, “Without going into too much detail, I’m going through something very similar at the moment and listening to your story is just so inspiring about what you’ve said, what you’ve been through, and especially Jon, your husband - he went to night classes for two years to really understand depression - so he’s your rock and can be there… it’s unreal.”
At the end of the interview Beverley revealed she will be returning to Coronation Street soon. Beverley said, “I’m back on the 1st May - in a PVC skirt I’m sure!”
