Sam Brown gets up to win Betway Handicap Chase

Sam Brown (28-1) hacked up for trainer Anthony Honeyball and jockey Aidan Coleman in the Betway Handicap Chase.

Wishing And Hoping made a bold bid from the front in the Grade Three contest but first Shan Blue laid down a challenge, before Sam Brown came to the fore at the second-last.

He opened up a lead galloping down to the final obstacle and passed the post lengths clear of 5-2 favourite Shan Blue, with Killer Kane in third.

Honeyball said: “He was in the National and I suppose we bottled it, but we had a lot of picking up to do after his last Haydock run (Grand National Trial).

“It probably came too soon after the Peter Marsh, when he nearly beat Royale Pagaille. Everything went right for him that day and he still didn’t win, but I thought that was his chance for a big one.

“We had to come here today and what a bonus. We’d have to look at next year’s National but he’s won that off a decent mark (147), so it will be tough for him.”
