ITV’s 2030 science based emissions targets approved by the SBTi

ITV's 2030 science based emissions targets have been officially validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative.

This means ITV’s 2030 emission reduction targets are deemed by the Science Based Targets initiative as consistent with levels required to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement.

The targets covering greenhouse gas emissions from ITV’s operations (scopes 1 and 2) are in line with reductions required to keep warming to 1.5°C, which is the limit that climate scientists argue is needed to prevent the most damaging effects of climate change. ITV’s scope 3 target, covering business travel and products and services, meet the SBTi’s criteria for ambitious value chain goals, meaning it is considered best practice and supports a well below 2 degrees warming scenario.

The latest science has made it clear that more needs to be done - and faster - in order to avoid the worst impacts of climate change and secure a thriving, sustainable economy. The next few years are critical, and companies have a vital role to play in helping achieve transformation at the pace and scale that is needed. Businesses taking science-based climate action benefit from greater opportunities for innovation, strengthened investor confidence and improved competitiveness.

As part of ITV’s Social Purpose Strategy, ITV’s 2030 Climate Action targets also include a commitment to reuse or recycle 90% of all UK waste, run a 100% sustainable supply chain, and train and certify the business in climate action, all by or before 2030. You can find more details on our Social Purpose Website.

Clare Phillips, ITV’s Director of Social Purpose

“A climate secure world goes hand in hand with successful business.  ITV wants to lead the way to a net zero carbon future.  By cutting our emissions in line with climate science requirements means ITV will play its part in preventing the worst effects of climate change and future proof our business.”

About greenhouse gas emission scopes

The Greenhouse Gas Protocol categorizes direct and indirect emissions into three broad scopes:

· Scope 1: Direct greenhouse gas emissions occur from sources that are owned or controlled by the company, for example, emissions from combustion in owned or controlled boilers, fleet vehicles etc.

· Scope 2: Indirect greenhouse gas emissions from consumption of purchased electricity, heat or steam.

· Scope 3: Other indirect emissions, such as from the extraction and production of purchased materials, fuels, goods and services, business travel, electricity-related activities not covered in Scope 2, waste disposal, etc.
