Constantin Film today released the first exclusive photos from SMILLA’S SENSE OF SNOW. The modern adaptation of Peter Hoeg’s worldwide bestseller stars Filippa Coster-Waldau, Elyas M’Barek and Henry Lloyd-Hughes, and is directed by BAFTA Winner Amma Asante (“Belle”, “Mrs. America”, “The Handmaid’s Tale”). Morten Suurballe, Amanda Collin, Set Sjöstrand and Alexandre Willaume also feature.
30 years after the novel was first published, the dystopian story is more relevant today than ever before: the question of identity and origin in this era of advancing globalization is as much a focus as are socially predominant topics such as the energy crisis, surveillance, the climate catastrophe and a clear tendency towards nationalism on a political level in many Western countries.
Copenhagen 2040: Smilla Jaspersen lives in a near-future surveillance state under threat from an impending energy crisis. She is alone and leads a withdrawn life until she meets a young Inuit boy who finds a way to her heart. When the boy suddenly dies in mysterious circumstances, Smilla wants to know why. Her search for answers leads her to the icy scenery of Greenland and right to the centre of dangerous political power games. Smilla’s extraordinary abilities are the key to the truth - about the boy and her own identity.
Filippa Coster-Waldau plays an outstanding lead role as Smilla Jaspersen in SMILLA’S SENSE OF SNOW. A young and upcoming Danish actress, she starred as one of two leading roles in DR's series “Salsa” (2022) which was praised by critics and audiences as the most bold and truthful youth series of all time. In 2022, Filippa starred as the lead, Louise, in Viaplay's Original series, “Where were you”. Filippa also does voice acting, and is the Danish voice of “Wednesday” in THE ADDAMS FAMILY.
Elyas M’Barek delivers a brilliant performance in his first international production in a leading role, in which he collaborates with British director Amma Asante for the first time. One of Germany’s most successful and popular movie actors, he achieved phenomenal success with his starring roles in TURKISH FOR BEGINNERS (2012) and the FACK JU GOEHTE trilogy (2013, 2015, 2017), which were seen by more than 25 million moviegoers. He also starred in further highly acclaimed roles such as the political thriller THE COLLINI CASE (2019), NIGHTLIFE (2020) and the box-office hit DAS PERFEKTE GEHEIMNIS (2019). In 2023 he was nominated for a BAMBI in the Best Actor category for his role in Michael Bully Herbig’s political satire A THOUSAND LINES. Elyas M’Barek is the German voice of “Paddington” in the films of the same name. The last part, PADDINGTON IN PERU, was released in cinemas in November 2024.
Henry Lloyd-Hughes is an esteemed British actor who is consistently elevating his performances across film and television. He will next star in THURSDAY MURDER CLUB directed by Chris Columbus for Netflix and was last seen in Hulu mini-series “We Were the Lucky Ones,” adapted from The New York Times bestseller. His past television credits include BBC1’s drama series, “Marriage,” Amazon Prime’s “Mammals,” AMC’s “Ragdoll,” ITV’s “Archie,” BBC/Amazon’s “The Pale Horse,” Netflix’s “The English Game,” BBC’s “Killing Eve,” and Channel 4/PBS’s “Indian Summers.” His past film credits include THE INBETWEENERS, Searchlight’s CHEVALIER and Lionsgate’s NOW YOU SEE ME 2.
SMILLA’S SENSE OF SNOW is a Constantin Film production in co-production with Viaplay, ARD Degeto Film and Baltic Film Services and in cooperation with Netflix DACH and in association with and distributed by ITV Studios.
