Keepers at Bristol Zoo have asked for the public's help choosing a name for their new baby pygmy hippo.

The hippo, a little boy, was born eight weeks ago. He's been hailed a huge success for the species which is endangered and rarely seen in the wild.

But now the is in need of a name and the public can choose their favourite

  • Hugo
  • Kito (precious in Swahili)
  • Tunde (which means ‘returns’ after keepers thought he might not initially survive)

We are really pleased with the calf’s progress, he has quite a cheeky character and is very playful with his mum. He loves the heated pool and is strong and very confident in the water now, swimming happily for a few hours at a time and resting alongside mum in the shallows.

Now it’s time for the youngster to have his own name and we’d love it if the public could help us choose the best name to suit him.

To vote for your favourite name visit the Zoo’s Facebook page from Wednesday afternoon and register. The poll closes on Sunday evening.
