DJ Derek's brother, Gerry, has paid tribute to him, describing how "fame amazed and amused him" but he "never changed":
"Fame amazed and amused him. It didn't make him rich, nothing changed.
He stayed in a small dark basement flat in St Pauls. He had nothing of value even his Lord Mayor's medal was below some dusty artefacts.
People told him they booked him because his love of the music came through."
