Westbury White Horse gets spring clean
It's a fixture of the Wiltshire landscape and recognised across the country - but now it's had a spring clean.
As many as 20 volunteers spent the weekend scrubbing the Westbury White Horse in time for the Queen's 90th birthday celebrations.
Power cleaners were used to remove the algae and lichen which had discoloured the monument - once fully clean it will be given a fresh coat of paint.
The project, which was organised by the Westbury Rotary Club, saw two volunteers at a time lowered down the face of the horse.
The Westbury horse is the oldest of several white horses in Wiltshire.
It's thought the 180ft tall and 170ft wide carving was carved to commemorate King Alfred's victory over the Danes at the Battle of Ethandun in in 878 AD.
