World's rarest sea-turtle dies after being cared for at Bristol Aquarium

One of the world's rarest sea-turtles being cared for at Bristol Aquarium has died.

The Kemp’s Ridley, which measured around 30cm long, was discovered by a dog walker on Aberystwyth’s North Beach.

It was suffering with hypothermia and septicaemia and was rushed to Bristol for emergency treatment.

But despite efforts to save the turtle it died on Christmas Day.

It's thought it may have been caught up in strong ocean currents as a result of Storm Desmond and carried in to UK waters.

Kemp's Ridley is the world’s rarest marine turtle species and is officially classified as ‘critically endangered’ in the wild.

Adult Kemp’s Ridleys are restricted to the Gulf of Mexico but juveniles travel much further, occasionally ending up in British waters after journeys of approximately 6,000 miles.
