Becky Watts trial: Matthews was 'paranoid and controlling'

Matthews was 'paranoid' abut Hoare and was often 'controlling' of her, a court has heard.

A friend of the couple, who isn't being named, told the court:

He was paranoid about people breaking in.

He was paranoid about Shauna, I'm not sure about what, but he didn't like her going out without him.

He was just a paranoid person. I think he was slightly jealous of her speaking to other men.

– Witness

She said she had become "like a sister" to Hoare and they shared "intimate secrets".

The witness told the court that Matthews often "controlled" a number of things in Hoare's life, including whether she smoked or not, her eating, and her drinking.

At one stage he told the witness, who had offered Hoare a pasty, that she couldn't eat it because she was on a diet.

He was very protective of Shauna. At first they were quite a normal couple, but I noticed a lot of stuff as time went by. He did get a bit controlling of her.

– Witness

The woman told the court although Hoare did not get on with her family, she believed it was more Matthews that was holding her back from seeing them. She said he would often park his car away from their home so her family could not track the couple down.

I got the feeling Nathan was using Shauna's past as a way to justify not letting her live any kind of independent life at all.

– Witness

The witness also told the jury Matthews would charge her petrol money so they pair could come visit her. She said she believed it was around £8 a time, which she couldn't "really afford", but she tried to pay it "for Shauna's sake".

Matthews would also make the witness pay money for the cigarettes she gave to Hoare, the court heard.

During cross examination from Adam Vaitilingam, defending Matthews, the witness explained Matthews didn't want Hoare to smoke, so would charge her when she had one.

But because Hoare didn't have money, the witness would end up paying Matthews when she gave her friend a cigarette.

Matthews would also be "aggressive" towards his partner:

He said to her 'shut the f**k up you t**t'. He said that a few times, or something pretty similar.
