Veterans gathered in Bristol today for a special church service. Many are now in their nineties and this could be the last event of its kind.

They were accompanied by bagpipers as they made their way into the mayor's chapel to remember those who took part in the Normandy landings.

Michael Brennan, from Bristol, who was among the first British infantry to land on French soil during the normandy invasion, said he's gratified so many still remember what they did.

I am quite surprised how many do know all about it. Not only in this country but in France, Germany, Holland.

– Michael Brennan

It's probably the last significant event we will do now, because of their age.

It's all about freedom. These are the guys who preserved our freedom and protected millions around the globe.

– Peter Hodge, Bristol Normandy Veterans Association
