Police are looking for witnesses after a man in his 80s died following a suspected hit-and-run collision in Bruton.

The man was found lying in Cole Road with serious head injuries at about 8.35pm last night (Tuesday 14 October). He was going to his local shop and had his two dogs with him which were unharmed in the incident.

The injured man received medical attention at the scene but died later.

Police say the vehicle involved would have sustained substantial damage in the collision - in particular a smashed windscreen. They add that people would be aware of the damage caused to the car.

Police believe the vehicle was travelling from Yeovil, through Bruton, travelling in the direction of Frome or Evercreech.

"We would particularly like to speak to the driver of a small light coloured three door hatchback, possibly with a stripe through the centre of the roof of the vehicle, which passed through Bruton at about 8.30pm. We believe the driver may be able to assist us with our investigations.

"We would like the driver or anyone else who has information to help our enquiries, contact Yeovil CID on the force number 101."
