It was the news everyone who was searching for Josh Clayton dreaded to hear.

Last night the crew from St Mary's Lifeboat recovered the body of a man from rocks in the sea off Tresco. The body had been spotted by a French yachtsman on the uninhabited island of Tean.

It was close to where the 23-year-old from Taunton was last seen and while there won't be any identification of the body for some days to come, his friends and family are mourning.

Josh Clayton had worked on the Tresco estate for a number of seasons and it was after a night out with colleagues, on Sunday 13 September, that he went missing, prompting extensive searches.

Josh's family had travelled to the island for the investigation but have now returned home. Police say they will make sure they are updated.

We spoke to Sgt Colin Taylor from Devon & Cornwall Police on the Isles of Scilly earlier today and he told us what would be happening to the body they had recovered.

The 23 year old from Taunton was last seen on Tresco early last Sunday morning.

Sniffer dogs and helicopters have had to be brought in to search the difficult terrain.

And police have thanked the local community for their help in the search:

The search for Josh is in its eighth day. I am saddened to report that despite considerable effort we have not yet found him. He went missing in the early hours of Sunday 13th September. The search for him continues both on land and in the water.

The Cornwall Rescue Group and other local volunteers continue to comb the island. Devon and Cornwall Police Divers have now entered the few expanses of inland fresh water and surrounds along with some coastal diving. People from Scilly and further afield have been very helpful with their encyclopaedic knowledge of the island and its nooks and crannies to help inform the search. It really is a marvellous community that has pulled out all the stops for this young man.

Specialist search teams back out in missing man hunt

Specialist search teams are back out on Tresco this morning as the hunt for missing Josh Clayton continues.

“We remain focussed on our task and our reasons for it. The terrain we are searching is complex.

“Whilst we are on an island one mile by two miles there is a huge amount of dense ground cover with thickets of gorse, brambles and rhododendrons as well as woodland and undulating coastline. The thorough searching is painstaking and exhausting for those involved.

“As one who’s task is not the actual searching I am in awe of those who, all day, penetrate their way inch by inch through thickets of thorns looking for Josh or his personal effects. It is meticulous and focussed.
