Becky Watts trial: Lack of Becky DNA in bathroom is 'extremely surprising'

A forensic scientist has told court it is "very unusual" that no DNA

Asked if there was any DNA belonging to Becky in the bathroom at Cotton Mill Lane, Ms Morse replied "there was nothing found in, or on, the bathroom".

It doesn't mean she couldn't have been dismembered in the bathroom, it could still have happened, I find it extremely surprising we found no blood in that bathroom, it is a difficult thing to try and clean up from all the nooks and crannies.

– Claire Morse

She added, if the dismemberment did happen in the bathroom it would have been a "combination of covered surfaces and full cleaning".

Becky Watts trial: Blood stains found in family home matched Becky

Blood staining was found on door frames on both sides of Becky's bedroom, the master bedroom and the spare room, the court has heard.

Forensic scientist Claire Morse told the jury she discovered a hand print in staining on Becky's door frame, roughly 5ft above the ground.

Listing where she discovered blood Ms Morse said she had examined staining on both sides of Becky's bedroom door frame, twice on the master bedroom door frame - which also had a finger print in one - and also on the door frame of the spare bedroom.

When she profiled the DNA, taken from the blood stains, she told the court it matched samples taken from Becky's toothbrush and remains.

The court then heard the forensic scientist had then analysed items found in the suitcases in the shed including two face masks and a knife.

DNA matches to Matthews were found on both face masks, while a match to Hoare was also discovered on the inside edge of one.

On the inside of the mask there was a mixed profile which contained all the components of both Ms Hoare.

There is strong support she contributed to this sample.

That finding is what could be expected if she had contact with the mask, or what could be expected if she had worn it at some time.

– Claire Morse

She added that DNA from at least three people was found on a knotted bin bag, also taken from a suitcase, at least one was male, and one that could suggest Hoare had also contributed.

A number of blood stains, on the masks, safety goggles and circular saw matched Becky Watts, she said.

She went on to add that a 'Tweety t-shirt' found in the spotted suitcase had a high DNA match for Hoare - indicating she could be the usual wearer of the garment.

Both a blood stained green jumper, and a blue onesie, had been cut using scissors. The jumper, which had DNA matches to Becky, had been cut from the bottom to top at the back, while the onesie had the back, gusset and straps cut.

Becky Watts trial: Family visibly distressed as circular saw is demonstrated in court

The family of Becky Watts held their head in their hands and looked visibly distressed as a witness show an identical circular saw - then switched it on.

Matthews sat with his head bowed as an expert in dismemberment told the court how the saw operated.

Sarah Hainsworth, professor of materials and forensic engineering at the University of Leicester, said it would have been easier to dismember a body if two people were involved.

There is no direct evidence that would say that this dismemberment was conducted by one or more persons. However, it would be easier to conduct a dismemberment such as the one I have seen, if more than one person was involved.

A duplicate of the saw used to dismember the body - bought by a police man during the investigation - was shown to the jury and then plugged in so they could hear the level of noise it made.

Members of Becky's family remained ashen-faced, and her auntie Sarah Broom left the court, as the 1400 watt, Mac Allister saw was handled by the jury and as the witness went into detail about its use.

Becky Watts trial: Accused - 'Becky was spoilt and selfish'

Matthews was "not fond" of his step sister, and would get quite agitated by her and the way she spoke to his mum.

Telling the court about a holiday she took with Matthews, Hoare, Becky and Anjie and Darren Galsworthy, a witness said the 28-year-old would often complain about the teen.

The witness is not being named.

He hated the way she treated his mum, he just said she was a brat, he used that word a few times.

He just generally disliked her. Nathan said she treated his mum like c**p and she was spoilt and selfish.

He said he hated Becky, when her name was bought up he would get quite agitated. He would start moaning and get agitated.

– Witness

When questioned about Hoare, the witness said she believed the 21-year-old felt the same, but did not hate the teen as much as Matthews did.

Shauna was not keen on her either because of the way she treated Anjie, but with Shauna it was more of a dislike, rather than hatred.

– Witness

The witness said, while on holiday at Butlins in August 2014, they had appeared "like a normal family".

Becky Watts trial: Matthews was 'paranoid and controlling'

Matthews was 'paranoid' abut Hoare and was often 'controlling' of her, a court has heard.

A friend of the couple, who isn't being named, told the court:

He was paranoid about people breaking in.

He was paranoid about Shauna, I'm not sure about what, but he didn't like her going out without him.

He was just a paranoid person. I think he was slightly jealous of her speaking to other men.

– Witness

She said she had become "like a sister" to Hoare and they shared "intimate secrets".

The witness told the court that Matthews often "controlled" a number of things in Hoare's life, including whether she smoked or not, her eating, and her drinking.

At one stage he told the witness, who had offered Hoare a pasty, that she couldn't eat it because she was on a diet.

He was very protective of Shauna. At first they were quite a normal couple, but I noticed a lot of stuff as time went by. He did get a bit controlling of her.

– Witness

The woman told the court although Hoare did not get on with her family, she believed it was more Matthews that was holding her back from seeing them. She said he would often park his car away from their home so her family could not track the couple down.

I got the feeling Nathan was using Shauna's past as a way to justify not letting her live any kind of independent life at all.

– Witness

The witness also told the jury Matthews would charge her petrol money so they pair could come visit her. She said she believed it was around £8 a time, which she couldn't "really afford", but she tried to pay it "for Shauna's sake".

Matthews would also make the witness pay money for the cigarettes she gave to Hoare, the court heard.

During cross examination from Adam Vaitilingam, defending Matthews, the witness explained Matthews didn't want Hoare to smoke, so would charge her when she had one.

But because Hoare didn't have money, the witness would end up paying Matthews when she gave her friend a cigarette.

Matthews would also be "aggressive" towards his partner:

He said to her 'shut the f**k up you t**t'. He said that a few times, or something pretty similar.

Becky Watts trial: Accused had 'number of' threesomes

A woman has told the court how she had a threesome with Matthews and Hoare.

Shaking heavily, and crying in the witness box, the woman, who is not being named, said she had met Matthews through Hoare after they had been friends "for many years".

As she gave her evidence Hoare sobbed in the dock as the jury heard she had taken part in two threesomes with the couple at the beginning of 2014.

It started as a joke, when I was with my partner, because I spent a lot of time with them he would joke and say 'you are always there, what are you having a threesome?

We would laugh it off because it was ridiculous, but at the start of 2014 it came up in general conversation and we were laughing about it.

– Witness

She said that Matthews had recorded some of their encounters, and seemed embarrassed at asking. She added that at one point - when she kissed Matthews - Hoare got "a little bit funny" but later apologised and blamed it "on the drink".

Everyone took part it in, it was all by consent. It was recorded Nathan recorded it on a phone.
