Bristol is celebrating its role as European Green Capital with events over the weekend, including landmarks turning green.

The city has pledged to cut carbon emissions by 40 percent by the year 2020 as part of its green promise.

An ambitious year for Bristol began with an ambitious and stunning high wire crossing in the Cumberland Basin.

Crowds held their breath as Hollywood couple Jade and Karine lit up the night sky, officially launching the city's year as European green Capital.

Thousands turned out in Bristol last night to mark the start of the City's year as European Green Capital.

Bristol is the first UK city to be given the status and kicked things off with high wire stunt 100 feet above the ground.

Mayor George Ferguson even took a step away from his traditional red trousers to support the city's green ambitions:

The last minute touches are being put into place for a ceremony in Bristol tonight marking the city becoming the European Green Capital. The dress rehearsal took place last night including a high wire display almost 30 metres (100 ft) above the city.

Events are taking place across the city to celebrate Bristol's year as European Green Capital.

The Victoria Rooms in Clifton have been lit up bright green in honour of the title, as well as the Wills Memorial Building on Park Street.

Stunned Bristolians caught a glimpse of something very special today - a world-famous stuntman practised cycling across a 120-metre high wire 27 metres in the air - a rehearsal for tomorrow's Bristol Green Capital opening ceremony.

Jade Kindar-Martin agreed to wear a small camera for us as he performed his daring feat - here is what the world looks like from his point of view.

Tomorrow's dramatic encore. which is free to the public, will take place at 7pm tomorrow as part of the European Green Capital Opening Ceremony.

Some of the best vantage points include, Greville Smyth Park, Ashton Road and the Cumberland Basin, Hotwells.

Bristol is marking the start of its year as European Green Capital with a daring high wire stunt across two buildings.

World-famous tight wire artist Jade Kindar-Martin will cycle 120m between the Bond warehouses in Hotwells. He'll be 27m above ground with a trapeze artist suspended below him.

The event is taking place on Saturday at 7pm.
