Planners at Bristol City Council have recommended that plans to re-develop Bristol City's Ashton Gate stadium be approved. The final decision will be made by the council's planning committee next Wednesday (27 November).

If Bristol City get the go-ahead to re-build Ashton Gate then they are likely to abandon plans to construct a new stadium nearby at Ashton Vale. The Ashton Vale development has been hit by delays and the club are currently awaiting the outcome of a town and village green application for the site.

The future of Bristol City's ground has been hotly debated for years. Now, in the latest development, the club has unveiled plans for a revamped stadium at Ashton Gate to be shared with Bristol Rugby.

If it goes ahead work would start next year - the famous Wedlock stand would be rebuilt and the pitch moved. The proposals are an alternative to controversial plans for a brand new stadium nearby. Jonty Messer reports:

The club still wants to build a new stadium at Ashton Vale but the proposals are a back up in case that falls through.
