Local election results

Bristol has its first UKIP councillor following local election results overnight. Labour and the Greens were the other winners at the expense of the Lib Dems.

Elsewhere, the Tories increased their wafer-thin majority in Swindon, while there were few changes in Gloucestershire.

In Bristol, as well as UKIP gaining its first seat in the city, the Liberal Democrats lost 7 seats. Labour remains the largest party but with no overall majority.

In Swindon, the Conservatives held off a challenge from Labour and actually increased their majority.

Stroud stays with no party in overall control but there were gains for the Conservatives, Labour and the Greens.

In Gloucester no seats changed hands, but the Conservatives are expected to continue running the administration.

And finally in Cheltenham some success for the Liberal Democrats who gain a seat and stay in control.

A swing to UKIP cost Labour vital votes and halted their progress in Swindon according to Labour's group leader on the Borough Council.

Although Labour gained one seat from the Conservatives, their leader Jim Grant told ITV News that the "UKIP factor" meant that his party had stood still compared with the results in 2012

UKIP won a seat on Bristol City Council for the first time as Mike Frost won the Hengrove seat with 31% of the vote ahead of Labour and the Conservatives.

UKIP's Chairman in Bristol, Steve Wood told ITV News that his party is "here to stay"

The Green Party claimed significant progress in the elections for Bristol City Council increasing their representation from 4 to 6 seats.

Our reporter Richard Payne spoke to newly elected Councillor Tim Malnick who won the Bishopston seat with more than 47% of the vote

Labour Leader Councillor Helen Holland hailed it a good night for her party in Bristol and a bad one for the Liberal Democrats. She also told our reporter Richard Payne that UKIP had benefitted from national publicity in the run up to the local elections.
