Local election results

Labour gained three more seats in Weymouth and Portland, with one UKIP councillor also being elected. The authority remains with no one party in overall control.

Our Dorset correspondent Duncan Sleightholme has this report from the Weymouth and Portland count.

Labour have gained 3 seats on Exeter City Council and UKIP failed to secure a victory but came second in two of the 13 wards that were up for grabs.

The Labour leader, Cllr Pete Edwards, said it showed that people supported their policies for growth in the city.

Conservative leader Yolanda Henson lost her seat after 32 years as a councillor but says she'll continue working with the Conservative Party.

Labour remain the largest party on Weymouth & Portland Council with 15 seats after gaining three.

No party is in overall control. The Conservatives have 11 seats (-3) , Liberal Democrats 6 (-1), Independents 3 and UKIP 1

The first results are being declared for the local elections held in Weymouth & Portland yesterday.

The turnout across the district has ranged from 55.46% in Preston Ward where Hazel Bruce won for the Conservatives to 27.32% in Melcombe Regis where Francis Drake has won for UKIP..

Plymouth City Council reports that the turnout on polling day for the local elections was 37.34%

The count will start at 1.30pm this afternoon

The turnout for the European Election was 37.62%. The count will be held on Sunday.

Counting will take place today for the local elections which happened yesterday.

A third of seats were up for election in Plymouth, Weymouth and Portland and Exeter, as well as a number of seats on other councils around the west country. The first results are due later this morning.
