Remembering the Cromwell Street murders

20 years ago an investigation started that was to result in one of the biggest mass murder cases in the country. The police began digging in the garden of number 25 Cromwell Street in Gloucester. They went on to discover 12 sets of human remains in various locations.

Fred West hanged himself before he could be brought to trial, but his wife Rosemary was sent to prison for life. She will never be released. Former Gloucester reporter Tim Hurst broke the story on ITV News. This is his memory of those events...

It is 20 years since the horrors of Cromwell Street in Gloucester were first uncovered.

It was subsequently revealed that Fred West and his wife Rosemary West murdered at least 11 people at various addresses in the city including their home at 25 Cromwell Street.

The pair were finally apprehended and charged in 1994. Fred West committed suicide before going to trial, while Rose West was jailed for life.
