Special Olympics in Bath

The first Special Olympics GB's National Summer Games ever to be staged in the South West are drawing to a close tomorrow.

Organisers have called the Games a resounding success, but challenges still remain for people with learning difficulties.

The Special Olympics National Summer Games in Bath is well and truly underway. The opening ceremony took place on Wednesday, with a performance by Britain's Got Talent star Susan Boyle. The action ends tomorrow.

Sporting events at the Special Olympics National Summer Games got underway in Bath today - with Britain's Got Talent star Susan Boyle presenting the medals.

More than 1,700 people will compete in 12 sports over the next three days.

This video shows the Flame of Hope arriving at its destination - the Opening Ceremony for the Special Olympics National Summer Games in Bath.

The torch has been on a long journey through the country, carried by athletes competing in the Special Olympics.

It was brought onto the stage at the Royal Crescent by competitors from the west country and passed to tennis player Thomas Mellor from Cheltenham who used it to light the cauldron signalling the start of the games.

Last night there was an grand opening ceremony with an appearance by Susan Boyle.

More than 1700 people will compete in twelve sports over the next three days.

The flame left Bristol on Wednesday morning and carried to Bath.

Tennis player Thomas Mellor will use it to light the cauldron for the games on Wednesday afternoon.

ITV's Britain's Got Talent star Susan Boyle will be among those performing.
