Delays in Gloucestershire and Somerset as roads closed by flooding and weather warning remains

Several roads across Gloucestershire and Somerset have been closed due to flooding following heavy rain and snow at the weekend.

The M50 eastbound was among them, causing long delays near Ledbury - it has now reopened, but a westbound slip road remains shut.

The M5 was also closed in a southbound direction, causing severe congestion on Monday 6 January.

Environment Agency flood warnings remain on:

  • The River Severn near Tewkesbury

  • The River Brue and Glastonbury Millstream from Lovington to Highbridge

  • The River Yeo from Sherborne to Yeovil

Road closures in Gloucestershire

  • M50 Westbound entry slip road closed due to flooding at J2 A417 (Ledbury)

  • A40 Westbound closed due to flooding from B4063 (Arle Court Roundabout, Cheltenham) to A417 (Elmbridge Court Roundabout, Gloucester)

  • Two Mile Lane in both directions closed due to flooding from The Golf Club to Gloucester turn off

  • B4058 in both directions closed due to flooding from Nympsfield turn off to The Recycling Centre

  • Frog Furlong Lane in both directions closed due to flooding from Down Hatherley Lane (Down Hatherley) to Innsworth Lane

M5 delays remain after flooding

Severe delays remain on the M5 in Gloucestershire after flooding forced the closure of the southbound carriageway on Monday 6 January.

The road was shut between junctions J9 and J11A near Gloucester according to National Highways. Delays of up to 30 minutes remain against expected traffic.

The latest update from National Highways on the social media platform X said: "The M5 is now OPEN southbound between J11a Gloucester and J12 Quedgeley."There are 30 minute residual delays so please allow extra journey time whilst traffic flow returns to normal. Thank you for your patience."

There are also some delays on roads near the village of Lacock in Wiltshire, where the river Avon has burst its banks.

Road closures in Somerset

  • Langford Road in both directions partially blocked due to flooding from A377 Newbridge Hill to Rivenford Lane.

  • Langport Road in both directions closed due to flooding from The Church (Muchelney) to Tanyard Lane / Huish Drove (Huish Episcopi)
