An historic building in Weymouth has gone up in flames, leading to around 60 firefighters being brought in to tackle the blaze and around 25 people being displaced from nearby buildings.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service were first alerted to the fire on King Street at 7:38am on Saturday 4 January.

Firefighters from Weymouth, Dorchester and Portland initially attended and found the roof of the building, which is home to the Dorset Burger Company, ablaze.

An aerial ladder platform was also sent by Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Station from their Yeovil station.

Additional crews from Bere Regis, Maiden Newton, Wareham, Bridport, Charmouth, Yeovil as well as a second aerial ladder platform from Westbourne were also called, along with a support vehicle from Dorchester and a water carrier from Bridport.

Around 60 firefighters helped to tackle the flames at the height of the blaze, according to the fire service.

The owners of the burger bar have said they are "devastated" by the fire.

In a post on Facebook, Dorset Burger Company wrote: "We can honestly say that we’re devastated. I’m afraid that we arrived this morning to see our building on fire.

"Everyone is safe thank goodness and the fire brigade and police are brilliant while they are trying to put out the fire.

"We will be shut into further notice but will keep you all updated here.

"Thank you to all of you for your messages, we really appreciate it."

Around 25 people have been made to leave their homes as a precautionary measure.

The fire service began scaling back the operation around 10:20am - although the incident is still ongoing.

By 11am, it had been scaled back to four fire engines and the two aerial ladder platforms. The fire service also confirmed that the fire is out and remaining crews are dealing with remaining hot spots and dampening down the building.

A spokesperson for Dorset Fire and Rescue Service added that the road reopened around 2:30pm when the final crews left, though a re-inspection will be carried out later in the day.
