Chocolate button loving Betty celebrates turning 103 with candlelit Christmas carol concert
Sam Blackledge reports on a very special candlelit concert to mark a 103rd birthday
A 103-year-old woman - believed to be one of the oldest people in Plymouth - has celebrated her birthday with a festive candlelit carol concert.
Betty Witchell, a resident at Greenacres Care Centre, joined in with a musical-themed afternoon to mark her big day.
Surrounded by friends and carers, Betty enjoyed a performance from a local singer.
Kelly Hyatt, who works at the home, said: "Betty is 103 years young. She has been here for about eight years now.
"Pre-Covid she was walking around enjoying the home, and loved having her hair done. She is a bit quieter these days but always enjoys her chocolate buttons.
She added: "It's not easy for everyone at Christmas, we are very considerate that not everybody wants to celebrate, but we do our very best to make everyone feel as welcome as possible.
"We've had an awful lot going on already. We've had an Elvis tribute act, we've had a residents' trip to the garden centre to buy gifts for their loved ones and a party which raised almost £2,000 for charity."
