A woman and a child who were found dead in 'unexplained circumstances' in Cornwall are believed to be mother and son.

Officers were called by the ambulance service on the morning of Saturday 7 September following a report of concern for the welfare of two people in Bodmin.

Emergency services were sent to a property in the Fletchersbridge area, where the woman and child, aged 31 and 9, were given emergency treatment. But both were later confirmed dead at the scene.

Formal identification is ongoing but their next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

Detective Inspector Neil Blanchard said: “This is a tragic and incredibly sad incident.

“The deaths are being treated as unexpected and are currently unexplained, so we are investigating them to establish the full circumstances of what occurred.

The woman and child are believed to be mother and son, aged 31 and 9.

“I would like to reassure the community that this is being treated as an isolated incident and at this time we are not seeking to speak to anyone else in connection to the deaths.”

In a statement, Ben Maguire, the new MP for North Cornwall, said: "My thoughts are with the family of the two deceased, as well as the community of Fletchersbridge and its surrounding areas, who I’m sure are deeply shocked by their passing.

"I’m in constant touch with the police, who are doing an excellent job in difficult circumstances. I’ve also reached out to the child’s school to offer my support."
