Claims Cheltenham to Gloucester cycle route is too wide and will need to be redug are 'untrue'
Speculation that part of the Gloucester to Cheltenham cycleway has been built too wide and will need to be dug up is "completely untrue", according to highways chiefs.
There have been several comments online suggesting that part of the Churchdown stretch of the planned 26-mile cycle “spine” which aims to link Bishop’s Cleeve with Stroud had made the road too narrow for motorists.
People have been saying that the cycle path section between Brickhampton Golf Course entrance and the Dowty traffic lights has been built too wide, and that as a result, it needed to be dug up again to make the road wider and safer.
However, Gloucestershire County Council says this is “unfounded social media speculation” and is “completely untrue”.
The cycle spine is part of Shire Hall bosses’ plans to create a “Greener Gloucestershire” by encouraging more sustainable methods of transport and reducing carbon emissions from vehicles.
However, concerns have previously been raised that the route could become a “£15 million white elephant” if it is not properly maintained once complete.
