Rescuers were called to a boat which had run aground in the Bristol Channel after its owner tried to refloat it.

Weston-super-Mare RNLI and Clevedon Coastguard Rescue Team were paged on Tuesday 26 September to a May Day call of reports of the boat in the bay at Weston.

The boat had been aground since the early hours of Monday but the owner had returned in a bid to get it afloat and had run into difficulties.

Rescuers raced to the scene and found the owner of the boat had managed to get ashore safely.

Weston RNLI lifeboat operations manager Chris Ware said: “The owner had gone back onboard in an attempt to refloat the boat, but unfortunately it was overwhelmed by the incoming tide.

"It’s distressing and upsetting to see a vessel sink but we are glad the casualty was able to return to the beach safely and no one was injured."

Coastguards are warning people not to go near the boat. A spokesman for Clevedon Coastguard Rescue Team said: “We strongly advise against approaching the vessel, as it poses immense risks and dangers. Please respect the maritime authorities and their ongoing efforts to manage the situation safely.

"Your safety is our top priority.”
