Bristol flooding: Roads and footpaths underwater as rain hits city

Parts of Bristol were underwater this morning (23 March), after a night of heavy rain caused flooding in the city.

Residents were urged to "act now" after the Environmental Agency (EA) issued two flood warnings for areas in the city.

Photos show high water levels on Bristol roads near Sea Mills train station and the Cumberland Basin.

Flood alerts and warnings are still in place across Bristol this afternoon, including at Portishead and along the Severn and Avon.

There are three ratings the EA can issued for flooding - an amber flood alert, a red flood warning, and a severe flood warning.

If there is an alert in your area, the EA says: "Flooding is possible in this area. Monitor local water levels and weather conditions."

"Avoid using low lying footpaths or entering areas prone to flooding. Start acting on your flood plan if you have one. Environment Agency Flood Warning Officers set the river or tidal levels that have triggered this message."

Of a more serious flood warning, the EA says: "Flooding is expected in this area. This means properties are at risk of flooding. Please take action to protect yourself and your property and monitor local weather and river conditions.

"Avoid contact with, walking or driving through flood water. Consider activating any property flood protection products you may have."
