Meet the young girl from Cornwall who turns crisp packets into blankets for the homeless
A caring seven-year-old from Cornwall has collected hundreds of crisp packets to be turned into blankets for the homeless.
Esme Braddock wanted to help after seeing many rough sleepers on a family trip to London.
Her mum and dad then found about groups across the country who could turn old foil-lined packets into blankets.
It was a notice on the family's front window in Torpoint that resulted in people bringing hundreds of crisps to their door.
The family say even workmen putting down cables in their street have been posting them through their letter box.
Esme's proud mum Catherine said: "We went to London for half-term and rough sleepers were everywhere, especially in the city centre.
"Esme is really sensitive and we just went online to see about ways we could help. We found out about these groups who receive crisp packets and can turn them into blankets for the homeless. It seems to be a relatively new thing."
Torpoint Scouts, who meet down the road from the family in Wellington Street, decided to help by collecting and washing the bags for the family.
Carbeile Junior School, where Esme is a pupil, and the Torpoint Co-op also started collecting.
Esme's dad Scott said: "The store was already collecting packets and they have decided to donate them to us. They said they had four bags, and I thought four bags of crisps, but it turns out they meant four bin bags."
About 75 packets are ironed together to make a foil-lined blanket to reflect the body heat - similar to those sheets used on athletes after long distance races.
They are also wind and waterproof and remove waste which takes decades to break down from the environment.
The family, completed by older brother Spencer, reckon they have hundreds of packets - a number they say could easily rise into the thousands.
They are sending them to different groups around the country to spread the help about.
Catherine said: "We are not stopping for a while, Esme is just so excited about it."
