Two mystery containers have been “professionally removed” from a beach in Cornwall.

The blue barrels, which were sealed shut, randomly turned up on Gwithian Beach near Hayle.

Firefighters at Tolvaddon Community Fire Station posted pictures of the containers on their social media, urging members of the public to keep their distance.

They said they needed to be “professionally removed”, which was due to take place today (December 1).

“Two full containers located on Gwithian Beach today - please do not touch,” Tolvaddon’s post said.

The Coastguard at Portreath also issued a warning after moving the containers to a more secure location.

"Today (November 30), we were called to assist Cornwall Fire Service to locate and move two containers from the water line up the beach to a place of safety,” they said.

"Please stay clear and do not approach the containers.

"If you find anything out of the ordinary like these containers, please report to the Coastguard and Cornwall Fire Service."

The exact contents of the containers were not made public.
