Trains had to be temporarily halted in Plymouth after someone got “stuck in mud” while reportedly digging for worms.

Network Rail paused services to allow search and rescue teams to cross a railway line while looking for the trapped person on 29 March.

They became stuck in the mud at the River Plym estuary in Marsh Mills around 1pm, sparking a large response from emergency services.

This included the Coastguard, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service and Devon and Cornwall Police, who even sent up a thermal-imaging drone to help find the individual.

Simon Carey, of Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, said: "People don't need to be alarmed about the large amount of emergency services in the lay-by.

"This is a joint operation between the police, fire and coastguard service.

"The police will be sending up a thermal imaging drone to contribute to the search effort that has already been conducted.

"We would like to thank the railway service who were also part of the operation, and assisted with stopping services to the line while the search was underway."
