Police have confirmed their investigation is ongoing after an incident yesterday, 12 March, in Plymouth that allegedly involved an axe.

The incident happened on Pike Road in Efford at around 4.40 pm and police arrived at the scene near the Co-op store after receiving calls about an assault.

Officers from Devon and Cornwall Police set up cordons and closed off Pike Road and Blandford Road while initial inquiries were carried out.

The police helicopter was also called to the location.

This morning, 13 March, police have confirmed that officers remain on the scene speaking to witnesses and they are actively searching for the offender.

Many people who witnessed the incident told PlymouthLive yesterday that an axe was used by the attacker, but police are yet to confirm this themselves.

The man who was attacked was treated by paramedics before being dashed to Derriford Hospital for further treatment, where he remains at the moment.

A police statement released last night said: "Police responded to the report of a serious assault in Laira.

"As a result Pike Road was temporarily closed.

"Police remain on the scene speaking to witnesses, and are actively searching for the offender."

Anyone with information should call 101 and quote log number 619 of March 12.
