Bristol's Arnos Vale Cemetery has received emergency funding through the National Lottery to support it for the next four months.

The cemetery, which is just off the A4 at Arnos Vale, has 45 acres of woodland and wildflower meadows.

The coronavirus pandemic has had a massive financial impact on the community facility, which generates more than 70 per cent of its income through shop and room hire, along with regular events.

Chief Executive Officer Ellie Collier says: “We are hugely relieved and overjoyed to receive this vital funding to help keep our magical place safe. This funding will help to ensure our survival.

“I would like to thank the team and all those that have donated and supported us so far, your support is essential during these incredibly difficult times.”

The cemetery is home to a rich variety of wildlife, including lesser-horseshoe bats, large populations of slowworm and a family of badgers.

The funding provided some good news after some recent vandalism on site, including damage to the Community Garden.

Rob Kerslake, Chief Executive of The National Lottery Heritage Fund, said: “Thanks to money raised by National Lottery players we are pleased to be able to lend our support to organisations such as Arnos Vale Cemetery during this uncertain time.”
