Avebury Henge and Stone Circles closed for Summer Solstice

The National Trust is urging people not to travel to Avebury Henge for the upcoming Summer Solstice, which this year falls on the weekend of 20-21 June.

The neolithic site remains closed due to coronavirus restrictions banning mass gatherings, and the need to maintain social distancing.

The site's campsite, car parks, toilets, restaurant and shop will not be open, and the village pub will also be closed.

The National Trust says it has consulted widely with its partners (English Heritage, Wiltshire Council, the police, ambulance services and Avebury Parish Council) in coming to this decision.

Stonehenge is also closed for the Solstice this year - a decision which was announced on May 12.

The pagan community has also backed the move and asks people to respect the restrictions by enjoying the event from the comfort of their own homes.

Those who still want to enjoy the sunrise on the longest day of the year, and who don't have access to a dawn view from their homes, are encouraged to watch it all unfold online via an English Heritage live-stream.
