The demolition is the first phase of a major regeneration project in the area, and local people say the start of the work to demolish the flats is very significant and symbolic for the whole area.
Sanctuary Housing bought the land last year and, after a delay due to the Covid-19 crisis, the first steps have now begun in demolishing ten blocks and transforming the estate.
Across the road, work has already started on another part of the area managed by Clarion Housing.
A £22million investment will see these buildings, dating back to the 1960s, replaced with 200 new affordable homes.
