Villagers rescue woman from a riverbank in Gloucestershire after cliff fall

Two villagers in Westbury-on-Severn rescued a woman from Gloucester who fell off a cliff on the banks of the River Severn shortly before the tide came in.

Stuart Barry was walking with his family at the beauty spot when they spotted the young woman at the bottom of the Garden Cliff.

After Stuart called the emergency services, resident Leslie Gibson warned that the spring tide would be coming in fast.

Gas engineer Stuart was with his wife Joanne, and sons Edward and Matthew when they first spotted the woman on the estuary shoreline.

He said: "When I first reached her I wasn’t sure what had happened until I looked over I saw deep impact mark in the mud at the bottom of the cliff and two footsteps.

"I assume she fell from the footpath at the top of the cliff and then tried to take a few steps and collapsed. I’m surprised she survived the fall to be honest."

Leslie, who lives by the river, two police officers, and a young couple also came to help.
