VE Day remembered as Royal Mail use a Plymouth Welcome Home on their commemorative stamps
This amazing moment, captured on film during a street party in Oreston near Plymouth, is being used by the Royal Mail as one of eight commemorative stamps to celebrate VE Day.
The party was thrown for returning Prisoner of War Frank Tucker who was seen with his wife Joan and son Brian. The village of Oreston, led by Laurence Axworthy's mum, organised the event and she was given a copy of the photograph afterwards, which has stayed in the family ever since.
Mr Axworthy now uses the photograph in historical talks, to keep the memory of his family alive. It came as a huge shock when he found out it was to be immortalised as a stamp.
But although the stamp is a fabulous honour, Mr Axworthy prefers his own copy because it features his sister Lorraine, sadly cropped out of the later pictures. The stamps go on sale on VE Day.
