Police seize car after couple drive 300 miles for West Country 'mini-break'

A car was seized by police after a couple from Kent drove more than 300 miles to Cornwall for a ‘mini-break’ during the lockdown.

Officers from Devon and Cornwall Police found the couple asleep in the parked-up car in Falmouth yesterday (April 25).

When asked what they were doing, the couple said they lived in Kent but had driven to Cornwall for a break.

The officer added the couple were given a lift to the nearest train station and told to return home.

This is the latest incident where police have had to intervene when people have flouted the lockdown restrictions.

More than 160 people were fined in Devon and Cornwall over the Easter bank holiday weekend for ignoring the rules - including one person who drove hundreds of miles to collect an eBay purchase.

On other weekends during the lockdown, police stopped a tourist from Birmingham in a motorhome at the Devon-Somerset border while a group of climbers from Bristol were sent back to the West Country after attempting to climb a mountain in Wales.

Others were also fined for going on fishing trips or travelling to the region to get away from family.
