Why the Devon coastline was turned into the red sea

A stretch of the Devon coastline has turned into the red sea - with the most likely explanation for the change in colour being a recent cliff collapse.

This image was taken by local resident Jutta Gorf on Tuesday, April 21.

Environmental experts think the bright red water was most likely caused by a cliff collapse from the town's distinctive steep cliffs, but could also be caused by a form of algae.

The most recent fall was on April 13, sending a huge dust cloud billowing into the sky.

The picture of the blood red sea was uploaded onto the town's community Facebook page.

One viewer wrote: “This is caused by sandstone being broken up by the sea after a nearby cliff fall, right?”

Another added: “It looks like a blood bath!”
