Is it really going to be a warm weekend across the West Country?

There are plenty of headlines suggesting a heatwave this weekend and highs of 20 degrees, but what are we really going to see across the south west?

Well, there is going to be a change in wind direction to a southerly. That will draw up some really warm tropical air from southern Spain, reaching the UK on Sunday.

Depending where you are in the UK some places may well see temperatures rising to 20 Celsius. North Wales, for example, or the northwest of England. We won't do too badly in the West Country, but again it depends where you are...

The north coast of Devon, most of Somerset and Gloucestershire should see highs of up to 18 degrees. It'll be quite sunny and there will be a bit of a breeze.

Hot spots on Sunday

However, there are other things at play for the rest of us. That breeze will end up being quite strong the further south and west you are; the Isles of Scilly could see gales! The south coast will also have that wind blowing right off the sea so temperatures here will be in the low-to-mid-teens (average for early April). Get out of the wind though and it won't feel too bad at all.

Maximum temperatures on Sunday

Another thing to bear in mind is the strength of the sun. UV levels on Sunday will be moderate, and the sun at the moment is as strong as it is in late August. Add in the breeze that'll make it feel cooler and you'll easily forget the need for sun protection, even if you're enjoying those rays in your garden.

So yes, we are going to have a bit of a cracker of a weekend in terms of dry, sunny and warm weather, but there are exceptions to the story. Whether you're in your garden, walking the lanes near your house or having a cuppa indoors, stay safe, enjoy it and don't forget to send me your views!
