Snow dusts the West Country and causes road disruption

The West Country has seen its first coating of snow as the white stuff fell on higher ground overnight.

It created a beautiful wintry landscape up on Bodmin Moor and parts of the Mendips, and came as something of a surprise after so much recent mild weather.

  • PROBLEMS ON THE ROADS

There was an early morning warning that the snow could adversely affect commuters on the roads - and it did.

Stuart Hughes, the Devon County Council Cabinet member for Highways Management, tweeted that "driving conditions are challenging."

And the white stuff did go on to cause some problems on the region's roads.

The A386 in Okehampton was closed in both directions with snow and ice from the A3079 to Holsworthy Road.

Police reported several vehicles have become stuck in the snow at Tanners Hill.

In Cornwall several vehicles slid off the A30 near Bodmin after hail and ice had turned the surface slushy.
