Royal Marine recruit dies after training incident in Cornwall

A Royal Marine recruit has died following an incident during a trainingexercise on a beach in Cornwall.

The Marine had "gone under water" during the exercise on Tregantle beach on Tuesday evening (January 21st).

South Western Ambulance Service says it was called at around 10pm to reports that someone had got into difficulty in the water.

Land, air and other specialist paramedics were sent to the scene where the man was treated before being sent by air ambulance to hospital.

The MoD said the recruit was in a critical condition on the night of the incident.

A Royal Navy spokeswoman said: "We can confirm the sad death of the Royal Marine who was injured in an incident earlier this week and we now ask for a period of grace for the family.

The Royal Navy says it is still investigating the incident.
