Angel of the North artist Sir Antony Gormley to create a new sculpture for Plymouth
The artist behind some of Britain's most iconic and recognisable artworks is going to create a new sculpture on Plymouth's West Hoe Pier.
LOOK II will be Sir Antony Gormley's first public installation in the UK in five years.
The Turner Prize winner's other works include the Angel of the North in Gateshead, and Another Place near Liverpool.
This piece will be unveiled in May and has been commissioned to coincide with the opening of Plymouth's brand new art gallery, The Box, and to mark 400 years since the Founding Fathers set sail for America on the Mayflower.
Portuguese artist Leonor Antunes has also been chosen to create a work that will stay in the museum's permanent collection and become part of the fabric of the city.
She will create a fused glass design for the East Window of St Luke's Church to be installed in February 2020.
Gormley's LOOK II is described as an anthropomorphic cast iron sculpture.
It is made up of 22 individual iron blocks that have been cast as one single element to create a twice life-size figure.
It will express the tension between going and staying, and the twin human desires of making roots and yearning for adventure.
The Box will open in spring 2020 as part of Plymouth’s major Mayflower 400 commemorations.
The museum is a £40+ million construction is a new cultural complex that transforms, extends and combines the original City Museum, Art Gallery and Central Library buildings and restores St Luke’s Church.
It will form the largest museum, art gallery and archive centre in the South West of England.
