Staff at a recycling depot in Midsomer Norton who discovered £15,000 inside a cardboard box turned detective to find the owner.

With the help of CCTV footage they were able to identify the couple who had mistakenly dumped the box.

They then alerted the police who were able to use ANPR cameras installed at the recycling depot to identify the car, and trace the couple to an address in Burnham-on-Sea.

When officers informed them of the find they were aghast, but thankful for all the hard work that had gone into finding them.

They'd been clearing out a dead relative's property in Bath, and had no idea what was stashed inside the cardboard box when they dumped it at the depot run by North East Somerset Council.

It was only by chance staff at the depot spotted the box and the cash. They'd been looking for an electrical cable when they noticed the box, which was tucked away inside another one.
