Bristol schoolgirl dies on New York school trip

Police in America have named the Bristol Grammar School pupil who died while in New York on a school trip.

The New York Police Department has named her as Anastasia Uglow and says her family has been informed.

Officers said her death is not suspicious and that the teenager may have fallen ill while on the trip.

The sixth form student from Bristol Grammar School, based in Clifton, was found unconscious and unresponsive at the hotel at which the school was staying on December 19.

A spokesperson from The Foreign Office confirmed the death on Christmas Eve.

She was taken to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Jaideep Barot, headmaster at Bristol Grammar School, soon released a statement. He said: "We are all devastated by the news and our thoughts are with their family and friends during this extremely difficult time."

He added the school is providing support to pupils, their parents and staff "affected by the news" and a book of condolence would be opened in the New Year.

"We are talking with the US authorities and are providing support to the family," a Foreign Office spokesperson said.
