Giant helicopter brings Yeovil to standstill

We're all used to staring up but motorists got a different view when traffic was brought to a standstill - by a helicopter on the road.

The AW101 helicopter travelled through the town as it was escorted by police from MoD Boscombe Down in Wiltshire to the Leonardo Helicopters site.

It took more than five-hours to complete the 55 mile journey, as traffic was brought to a halt to allow the wide load through.

The fuselage, measuring 4.97m wide and 5.5m tall, was hauled by a Kings Heavy Haulage truck and flanked by police and private escort vehicles.

Leonardo Helicopters has apologised for any inconvenience caused by the convoy.

Police escorting resources were provided by officers, paid for by the haulier at no cost to the public.
